Hialeah is the sixth biggest city in Maiade-Dade county of Florida. The city is home to over 224,000 people living within an estimate of 20-square miles (/467/About-Hialeah). Its name originates from the “Muskogee origin, meaning “pretty prairie,” by combining “Haiyakpo” (prairie) and “hili” (pretty)” (Hialeah, Florida Population, 2021). Glenn Curtiss, an aviator, and James H. Bright, a cattleman, got interested in Hialeah and started developing the town in 1921. The town opened the Hialeah Park Race Track and was incorporated in 1925 (Hialeah, Florida Population, 2021). The park's opening brought the town to the state map and attracted many people, including celebrated people in the U.S. such as Winston Churchill, the Kennedy's and Harry Truman. The Hialeah Park Race Track achieved more attention in the media compared to other sporting events in Miami. In 1926, a massive hurricane destroyed a significant portion of the city's infrastructure (Hialeah, Florida Population, 2021). The 1959 revolution by Fidel Castro changed the city's course as it was initially intended to be occupied by the wealthy and elite, where many Cuban exiles and veterans of World war two veterans freed to the area as a middle-class population (Hialeah, Florida Population, 2021). Hialeah has a high population of Cubans as they fled to the area during the Cuban revolution of 1959, the freedom fights between 1965 and 1973, and the Mariel boatliff of 1980 (Hialeah, Florida Population, 2021). The city is known as the only industrial city in the U.S. that has maintained a continued growth.
