Drew Brees as a Public Servant
Drew Brees is popular for his footballing skills, particularly in the quarterback position. Brees has played in the National Football League (NFL) for over two decades and is currently at New Orleans Saints (Triplett). However, Brees’ exploits extend beyond the field and into the service of other people. A footballer is in a very privileged position to disregard ongoing societal challenges, but the actions of the few that contribute to alleviating the mess speak highly of their personality and gain even much more respect within the footballing family.
To begin with, Drew founded the Brees Dream Foundation, which was the primary avenue through which he would use to create positive change in society. The organization’s mission is “improving the quality of life for cancer patients, and provide care, education and opportunities for children and families in need” (The Brees Dream Foundation). Today, the foundation has supported or partnered with other foundations including PeyBack, Make-A-Wish, Feeding America, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
His most remarkable moment was his role in the reconstruction after the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina that happened in August 2005. Brees arrived in New Orleans in March 2006 reveling in the consequences of a disastrous previous year. His foundation came to the fore helping in the rebuilding and recreating of social infrastructures including academic facilities, athletic centers, playgrounds, and parks. The foundation went the extra mile to offer after schools and mentoring programs. The revitalization and restoration of the city’s child care projects and facilities were fundamental in the ensuing favoritism and heroic standing among the fans. The moment became even more remarkable when he orchestrated the win of the National Football Conference (NFC) South Division title and the first-ever Super Bowl Championship for the club I 2009-10 season.
