This article explores the adverse effects of domestic violence on children and the role of schools in mitigating these effects. The researcher finds a strong correlation between domestic abuse and child abuse, where about half of the domestic violence instances involve child abuse. The piece establishes that domestic violence disrupts schooling which subsequently affects the educational outcomes of children negatively. Furthermore, domestic violence causes emotional trauma, which causes psychological barriers to learning. The Investigator indicates that schools have a critical role to play in addressing the issue. This article examines the effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) against mothers on the educational outcomes of children. It is based on data collected from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) conducted in 2005 in Colombia. In the study, 40% of women said they have ever experienced physical violence, where 22% of them had experienced it in the past 12 months. The sample includes children aged 6-14 who live in the homes where the mother in the DHS was present. The results demonstrate that domestic violence has negative implications on educational outcomes. It reduces school attendance, increases drop-out, and lowers grades. The researchers suggest that future studies on the topic should rely mainly on longitudinal data.
