The role of nurse managers is essential in defining a healthy working environment. A nurse manager takes on leadership roles to ensure effective delivery of care and services to patients and their families. In this way, it is good for nurse managers to conduct self-evaluation to understand areas that one is performing well and where improvement is required (Gopee & Galloway, 2017). The purpose of this reflection is to assess my nurse manager’s leadership strengths in specific areas within the nursing environment that include personal and professional accountability, career planning, personal journey disciplines, and also reflective practice reference behaviors/tenets. It is also important to address leadership skills that I will use to advocate for change and a personal goal for my leadership growth.
In personal and professional accountability, one strength I have is the motivation to excel in my education. I have been focusing on my degree and also planning for my career by taking an internship to gain skills necessary for career growth. After attaining my bachelor’s degree I plan to further my studies for a Master’s degree and other certifications in nursing leadership. The other strength is ethical behavior in practice such as showing respect for patients, staff, and colleagues I interact with during the internship. I also promote honest relationships with colleagues, staff, and patients while showing genuine concern and interest for the welfare of others and myself. However, I have a weakness because I have not been involved in professional associations. I have not been involved in any membership programs with any professional institutions to enhance networking and professional development (Nurse Manager Skills Inventory, 2008).
One strength I have in career planning is planning for my future. I know that I need to complete my studies with good grades so as to be successful in my future career. Further, by securing an internship, I know that I will have the skills I need to succeed in my future career. Even interacting with colleagues and other individuals at the internship allows me to gain more confidence in my future career in nursing. The only weakness I have in this area is that I do not seek mentors to guide me in career planning. I feel I am capable on my own to make my decisions on my career path, but I believe getting help from a mentor would offer me more knowledge and understanding of my career path (Nurse Manager Skills Inventory, 2008).
