Collaborative Care
As the baby boomers come of age, the demand for health services is also projected to grow even further. There is also a major challenge that most of the nursing schools are facing across the country as they try to expand their capacity, in the hope of meeting the demand of the rising call for care in light of the recent changes in the health care sector (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2017). This has in turn affected the level of health care quality that is available to the patients across the country (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2017). Most of the time, the nurses that offer health care in different capacities are overwhelmed and tend to get fatigued and in some of the cases develop burnouts. As such, the quality of care has also come down relative to the poor delivery that most of the nurses have been accustomed to. As the American Association of Colleges of Nursing works on a solution, there are ways that nurse leaders can resolve the issue of quality of health care offered specifically with the shortage in the Registered Nurses.
There are number of ways in which a nurse leader will differ in their approach when compared to the nurse managers. Considering the nurse leaders, they will in most of the cases not be included in the organizational structure. As such, they are not recognized as part of the organizational authority. Ideally, the power they hold comes from their ability to influence change, with elements of effective communication and interpersonal skills. At the center of the health care improvement and tackling nursing shortages, is collaborative care model. The element of interdependence between the various levels of profession is crucial to a wholesome approach in quality care (Montgomery, 2017). As a nurse leader, one of the baselines of collaborative care is formulation of teams with guided principles and objectives in quality and evidence based care. Within the group, all the members are given a chance to take part in the decision-making process (Montgomery, 2017). This is to mean that, in the event that the team is addressing the care of a single patient, every member on the team is given the chance to give their input on the best health care plan approaches. Using the team effort, it is much easier for the team members to give their best inputs relative to their experiences and skills to match. As such, in the end, every other member of the team is able to give a positive input (Montgomery, 2017).
To build on the individual and team efforts, it is crucial for the nurse leader to use a number of strategies. One of the main approaches includes creating a sense of connection between the members on the teams. Nurses need to feel that they are part of something bigger and positive in their place of work environment, individually and professionally. This works to raise self-esteem and help the individuals own their inputs, as part of the health care plan developed by the team. Another aspect is acknowledging the individual...
