USW1 NURS 5051 Assignment: Nursing Creating a Flowchart

Essay Instructions:

Workflow analysis aims to determine workflow patterns that maximize the effective use of resources and minimize activities that do not add value. There are a variety of tools that can be used to analyze the workflow of processes and clarify potential avenues for eliminating waste. Flowcharts are a basic and commonly used workflow analysis method that can help highlight areas in need of streamlining.
In this Assignment, you select a common event that occurs regularly in your organization and create a flowchart representing the workflow. You analyze the process you have diagrammed and propose changes for improvement.
To prepare:
•Identify a common, simple event that frequently occurs in your organization that you would like to evaluate.
•Consider how you would design a flowchart to represent the current workflow.
•Consider what metrics you would use to determine the effectiveness of the current workflow and identify areas of waste.
To complete:
Write a 3- to 5-page paper which includes the following:
•Create a simple flowchart of the activity you selected. (Review the Sample Workflow of Answering a Telephone in an Office document found in this week’s Learning Resources for an example.)
•Next, in your paper: •Explain the process you have diagrammed.
•For each step or decision point in the process, identify the following: •Who does this step? (It can be several people.)
•What technology is used?
•What policies and rules are involved in determining how, when, why, or where the step is executed?
•What information is needed for the execution of this step?
•Describe the metric that is currently used to measure the soundness of the workflow. Is it effective?
•Describe any areas where improvements could occur and propose changes that could bring about these improvements in the workflow.
•Summarize why it is important to be aware of the flow of an activity.
•Remember to include a cover page, introduction, and summary for your paper.

Introduction
There has been interest in information technology among health care practitioners with the aim of realizing better clinical efficiencies. However, even with the use of technology, inappropriate design affect the workflow decisions (Koppel, & Kreda, 2010). Flowcharts visually display the processes and step sequence in healthcare settings that are followed to improve health outcomes. The flow graphically represents the labor and delivery service steps to facilitate the process and improve nursing care where inefficiencies are eliminated.

 Process diagrammed
The flowchart process describes the delivery process of pregnant women from checking into the hospital to final discharge. The simplified version highlights that when birth is imminent the administration must be quick to deal with the situation when the mother is whisked to the delivery room. However, when the initial assessment shows that there is a need for caesarean section requirement, this is undertaken. In the case that the birth is not near as previously anticipated, the mother is allowed to register if this was not done. However, there is a need for more clarity that when birth is not imminent the mothers ought to visit the hospital later. In the case that there are no complications after birth, the child and mother are discharged after 48 mothers. However, in case there are complications, the mother is readmitted for close monitoring and assessment. The last phase is discharge, and discharge planning where it is expected that the mother and newborn will be picked by family or friends.
People doing the step
In L & D check and registration process, the clinicians and registration officers are responsible for recording, storing and verifying information. The nurses then use this information to follow up on the case where there is a need for C-section or there is imminent birth. In the case, the mothers are not ready there he nurses advice them to go home. The nurse then sends the other mothers to the delivery room. The nurses and midwives work together in the delivery room, and when there are C-sections required surgeons will conduct the operations. Physicians are also involved in monitoring the health outcomes of the child and mother especially when there are complications.
Technology used
Miesnik & Stringer, (2002) point out that to improve health outcomes for pregnant women, health practitioners ought to be familiar with the technology. The ultrasound technology is frequently used before the birth of a child, while the electronic fetal monitor is useful to monitor risks and heart rates. The vital signs are taken, and other technologies are infusion masks, incubator and oxygen therapy.
The Policies and rules
The policies and rules that govern birthing and the delivery process are associated with obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Association of Women's Health, Neonatal Nurses, Obstetrics (AWHONN). These policies and rules are necessary to ensure that the delivery is safety to meet the health care needs o...
