Cognitive behavioral therapy versus rational emotive behavioral therapy

Essay Instructions:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
When first introduced, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was unlike any other therapeutic approach. For years, psychotherapeutic techniques were driven by psychoanalytic theories. These techniques were time consuming, leaving many therapists frustrated with the length of time involved in helping their clients achieve a sense of relief. With the development of CBT, however, therapists were able to help their clients heal more quickly. This poses the questions: If CBT is more efficient than other techniques, why isn’t it used with all clients? How do you know when CBT is an appropriate therapeutic approach?
This week, as you examine cognitive behavioral therapy and its appropriateness for clients, you compare it to rational emotive behavioral therapy. You also develop diagnoses for clients receiving psychotherapy and consider legal and ethical implications of counseling these clients.
Assignment 1: Cognitive Behavioral Theory Versus Rational Emotive Behavioral Theory
While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) have many similarities, they are distinctly different therapeutic approaches. When assessing clients and selecting one of these therapies, you must recognize the importance of not only selecting the one that is best for the client, but also the approach that most aligns to your own skill set. For this Assignment, as you examine the similarities and differences between CBT and REBT, consider which therapeutic approach you might use with your clients.

Introduction.
The introduction of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was massive and life-changing. This is because of its incorporation and application of psychoanalytic theories and the effectiveness of the sense that human beings could alter their behaviors by changing their thought patterns. However, the introduction of rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) by Albert Ellis in 1955 was perceived as a radical change from the other therapeutic approaches that were popular and majorly used at the time. This paper seeks to examine the two forms of therapy, their similarities, their distinct differences, and the most appropriate version of CBT that would be more effective for the client as well as the reason why.
Similarities between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).
The two forms of therapy are so close and similar that it confuses its users in the most exact preference and environment of its actual application. CBT is utilized in the treatment of people with mental issues on the grounds of the effect of how an individual think, on their feelings, and consequently, their behavior. REBT is a form of therapy which challenges all the illogical ideologies of a person and their effects on their poignant and behavioral actions (Kropf & Cummings, 2017). Therefore, in the therapeutic approaches, what an individual perceives in their minds guides and directs how they act, and this can be either happily or sadly. Secondly, the two forms of therapy are similar in the sense that they attempt to solve an underlying mental problem by shifting their immediate feelings. In addition, the two approaches show the truth of the proposition that people do not face disturbance due to their stressful problems in their minds but by the manner in which they perceive the issues.
Differences between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.
Philosophical Difference.
The focus of CBT is magnifying misinterpreted cognitions while REBT discourses the theoretical concept of emotional disturbance as well as the distorted perceptions. In this case, the latter is more potent than the former because it provides a refined solution to issues of self-esteem (Ellis, 2017). This is because the sooner an individual uproots their absolutistic demands; the sooner they correct their cognitive distortions. In general, REBT tries to solve the profound question of unconditional acceptance letting an individual accept himself or herself the way he or she is with her flaws and also recognizing the flaws and imperfections of others, while CBT unconditionally agrees with the discomforts and unfairness of life the way it is (David, 2015). The philosophical difference between the two encourages my understanding and incorporation of the approaches in solving issues related to self-esteem in clients.
Secondary Disturbance.
Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy acknowledges the significance of secondary disturbance. In this case, the therapeutic approach states that the act of an individual of disturbing themselves about the problems is the primary factor of an extended and utterly permanent kind of ...
