Clinical Quality Measures
Clinical quality measures (CQMs) are used for measuring and monitoring the quality of healthcare services provided by eligible hospitals, professionals, and critical access care hospitals (CMS.gov, 2019). Five clinical quality measures used by CMS include controlling high blood pressure, chlamydia screening for women, exclusive breast milk feeding, breast cancer screening, and childhood immunization status (CMS, n.d.).
Each of the measures follows a specific structure. Each of the measures has a title and a description of what it is all about. Other components include a numerator, denominator, and denominator exclusions (CMS.gov, 2017). The numerator provides a description of the target condition, process, outcome, or event that is expected of the targeted population. The denominator identifies the population under measurement while the denominator exclusions define the population members that should be excluded from the measure population. A certified EHR technology is used to capture and report CQMs directly to CMS.
