Expansion of Medicaid entails a wider coverage of the uninsured populations. Most of the uninsured population are low-income earners existing in certain vulnerable racial groups that are a minority. The move will show inclusivity of the health care system. Moreover, more people will have access to affordable health care, utilization of the health services and financial security. Significantly, most of those in the coverage gap encounter a wide range of health problems. Non-insurance leaves them with unmet medical care and potential financial consequences leading them to worsened poverty levels. The program outweighs other market health insurance providers due to its zero payment from patients. However, it faces major hurdles making its provision difficult and the cause of non-expansion in other states. For instance, expanding below 100 the federal poverty level would lead to increased state expenditure and high program costs followed by low payment rates that would eventually collapse the program.
Challenges facing Medicaid include unstable eligibility due to variations in income and other deterministic features of the program that also affect enrollment.
