Compare and contrasts the anatomy and physiology of blood vessels: arteries, veins and capillaries. Why are these differences significant in the overall function of the circulatory system? Please be specific.
Blood vessels (arteries, capillaries, veins and venules) are a closed transport system that carry blood throughout the body the vessels contract or dilate according to needs. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Arteries are the strongest, most flexible, and elastic blood vessels as they must withstand greater pressure. The most important artery in the body is the aorta, as it is the one that receives blood from the heart and through which blood sent to the rest of the arteries. Veins drain the tissues and return blood to the heart and they are the conducting vessels or conduit. The vena cava is the most important veins in the body as they transport deoxygenated the heart for oxygenation. Capillaries connect the arterioles and venules and they are among the tiniest blood vessels. Capillaries have extremely thin walls that allow oxygen and nutrients to pass into the tissues to which they are anchored.
The differences are significant between the blood vessels as arteries transport the oxygen-rich blood to the capillaries, which facilitates the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The capillaries connect the arteries to veins and move the blood the veins for transport back to the lungs and heart. A capillary is a small blood vessel compared to the vein and artery and the thin wall allows the diffusion of gases, nutrients, and wastes between plasma and interstitial fluids. Veins carry the blood from a capillary bed back to the heart where there is reoxygenation in the heart. The body organs and tissue requires oxygenated and nutrients highlighting the importance of veins transporting low oxygen blood to the heart for oxygenation.
