Create a narrative synthesis by analyzing the films and readings provided and focusing on analyzing and synthesizing how different styles of narration effect the dramatic tension
Whatever you choose, you should be clear in how you are synthesizing the examples within the broader scheme of your claim.
creating a synthesis—so it will be a total of three analyses all grouped together in a
synthesis
As with most of my assignments, the choice of source and analytical framework is up to you.
However, remember that this is a synthesis assignment, so you should be reading and analyzing
the example-texts from each Module together; your portfolio will, in this way, be a connected
narrative of your own design. So, for example, you may decide to consider how specific
elements of a film from Module One, a reading from Module Two, and a critical/theoretical
concept from Module Three all work in concert to make points about economics; perhaps you
will take films from all three Modules and analyze how they expand our understanding of the
interplay of history and race; you could look at how different types of narrators in examples of
films and readings help to heighten dramatic tension or better communicate other authorial
strategies; the possibilities are wide-ranging. Whatever you choose, you should be clear in how
you are synthesizing the examples within the broader scheme of your claim. There are no
external sources required for this project, but you are certainly free to use them—if you do, be
sure that you cite and attribute properly
There is not a specific word count for this assignment, as you may have more to write about one
source over another. In general, however, it is typical for each source to be accompanied by
between 200-300 words, making the complete total around 600-900 words. Remember that
you are tying these sources together in a synthesis, so you will be making cross-references
throughout. No matter what, be clear, as you will be grading on your ability not just to make
claims but to sustain them. I realize that assignments are work, but try to have fun with this. It is
not intended to be formal, but just to work through your improved ability to synthesize and apply
your own ideas about film and literature.

Introduction
The novels, “A Temporary Matter” by Jhumpa Lahiri, “if Beale Street Could Talk” by James Bald, and “No Country for Old Men” by Cormac McCarthy are three intriguing novels. McCarthy’s novel focuses on the struggles encountered by humans as they pursue morality and ethics. James bald’s novel, published in 1974 explores the life of two a black couple whose lives are separated by false criminal accusations, whereas Lahiri’s novel explores the story of grief and secrets held by couples in marriage. different authorial strategies are adopted by the authors but symbolism cuts across the three novels.
A Temporary Matter Jhumpa Lahiri
Symbolism clearly manifests in Lahiri’s novel particularly when he introduced the blackout which supposedly equal darkness. the blackout is not a coincidence but rather an alert to the reader to note its symbolic importance throughout the play. the blackout signifies the tension between Shoba and Shukumar and seeks to inform the reader of the deep disconnection between the two. when Shoba comments about the power disconnection, Shukumar feels disgusted with the fact that the lights will interfere with her night schedule. more so, when Shukumar states that, “Shoba look like the woman she once claimed she would never resemble” she means that Shoba has undergone extensive change in appearance (Lahiri 6). Darkness has engulfed their home and there is a major realization about the couple. when the lights are disconnected, Shoba is forced to light the candles and while sitting they are forced to engage in a secret game which ends up being an exchange of confessions. for the first time, since they lost their baby, they realize that there was a difference. Shukumar notices the change when the darkness came in. at least they were able to open up and share secrets without fear that often comes with looking someone eye to eye. ideally, in the novel, darkness becomes the alternative reality which allows the couple can share grief, insecurities, and offload their fear. with light, they f...
