Nursing practice is guided by the American Nursing Association (ANA). ANA is the body charged with the responsibility of providing the guiding principles and codes of ethics within the nursing practice. It is incumbent of all the trained nurses to go through the set and agreed standards. They are, thus guided by the set standards for education, training, licensing and the professional practice. All nurses in the USA have to be registered and certified by the ANA to offer services to the patients. The licensing and certification are dependent on the line of training. All the nurses must earn state licensure after successful completion and graduation of the nursing program.
The nurses have to take the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses), which is monitored by the NCSBN. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing is mandated in the regulation of all the nursing practice. The licensure examination tests on the safety of the nurses and the patients, the handling of infections and the prevention of accidents in accordance with the NCSBN principles.
Certification gives the nurses the authority to provide care to specific groups of patients like the elderly, children and the mentally ill. The certification is provided by the American Nursing Credentialing Centre (ANCC). Advanced practice nurse certification is obtained by those nurses who seek additional certification (Billing & Halstead, 2015). The certifications are different depending on the state. The certification allows the nurses to provide specialized care and attention to the different patients in different states. It also gives them the authority and ability to be able to prescribe medications to the patients.
