Diabetes mellitus, often considered type 2 diabetes, is a consistent heterogeneous disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) resulting in insulin reaction or secretion and sometimes both. Further, it’s a long-lasting disease with compound pathogenesis. Hyperglycemia is a result of resistance to insulin action, inadequate insulin secretion, and excessive or inappropriate glucagon secretion (Banday et al., 2020). According to CDC, more than 133 million Americans are living with diabetes meaning it is a serious disease that can affect anyone (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). Signs and symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, tiredness, tingling, and numbness in hands and feet (Saladin, 2020). Type 2 diabetes can be hard to detect as it mostly occurs at an older age.
