Case Study on Moral Status
The Christian perspective concerning the nature of human beings is that people are God’s creation and were made in His likeness. Christians believe that humans are unique and special since they are created in God’s image. Christians also hold that all humans have a God-given free will – God offered humans the capacity to make their choices and decisions. Without free will, individuals cannot be termed moral beings, as they could lack the conscious choice to act and live uprightly (BBC, 2021). Christians also believe that life begins at conception, and consequently, the embryo should be handled with equal dignity as a human being. This viewpoint relates to deontological Christian ethics – a moral theory linked to the intrinsic human dignity and value (Ranganathan, 2019). Deontological Christian ethics emphasize respect for all persons. Accordingly, deontological Christian ethics focus on the action’s nature and its motive to determine whether the decision is wrong or right. For this theory, outcomes are irrelevant; rigidly obeying the specific rules and principles constitutes the key to acting rightly within a specified situation (Kilian, 2010). This moral theory dictates that no action that harms a human or their dignity is justifiable. Individuals are encouraged to love their neighbor and thus not act in a way that harms or threatens the other’s wellbeing or life (Ranganathan, 2019).
Jessica employs the moral agency theory to determine the fetus’ moral status. Moral agency constitutes a prerequisite to complete autonomous decisions, implying that the moral agency has the intrinsic ability to understand their actions’ full scope and the need to be held accountable for their outcomes of these omissions or activities (Rego, Rego, & Nunes, 2020). In the case study, Jessica wants to make the right decision by considering a better socioeconomic status and greater independence, alongside the conviction that human life is sacred. Marco also demonstrates moral agency theory since he will support Jessica in her choice concerning the unborn baby. He also views pregnancy and having a disabled child as burdensome and a hurdle to their economic plans and security. The theory supports their recommendation since the couple is competent humans with the capacity to deliberate autonomously concerning the burden and consequences of raising a disabled child.
Dr. Wilson uses scientism to determine the fetus’ mora status. Scientism incorporates efforts to extend scientific methods, ideas, attitudes, and practices to human...
