Communication and Collaborative Strategies in Health Care Informatics
Introduction
The modern health care industry continues to face many changes in legislation, regulation, and delivery of care due to the dynamic and complex nature of evolving patient needs. As a result, there is increasingly a need for specialized administration of care-related organizations and care delivery in the industry. Among the emerging areas of specialization in administration is health care informatics. Healthcare informatics integrates cognitive, information, computer, and healthcare sciences to assist in managing information in the health industry (Saba & McCormick, 2015, p. 232). The practical application of informatics within a clinical setting involves many processes that combine technology, data collection, and the relevant human resources or stakeholders.
Stakeholders in Healthcare Informatics
The application of informatics in health includes telemedicine, electronic medical records (EMR), mHealth, data warehousing, health information systems, decision support, and eLearning tools for developmental education. As an administration area, its core function is to avail information to the right people, at the right time, place, and for the right place, within, and without an organization (Aickelin, Chapman, & Hart, 2019). Therefore, many stakeholders are involved, including IT experts, nurses, social workers, physicians, physical therapists, researchers, policymakers, funders, hospitals, clinics, medical insurers, and members of the public seeking reliable and effective care information.
IT experts are responsible for handling the safety and performance of electronic equipment and processes key in data storage, analytics, and communications by ensuring safety, privacy, and relevance of the information for access by other stakeholders. Nurses and social workers are primary care providers best placed in collecting health data and information and integrating the said information within the relevant systems for access (Ryan, 2012). Hospitals and clinics provide key points for both data collection and informed decision-making based on the available information. While experts like physicians and physical therapists may form part of the data and information collection entities, they also rely on effective informatics to further their practices. Members of the public act as sources of data and information and, at the same time, consume the information towards healthy decisions, self-management, and preventive measures (Gamache, Kharrazi, & Weiner, 2018). Lastly, healthcare leaders rely on informatics in making informed decisions in terms of policy formulation, budget allocation, and improvement of the safety and quality of care.
Potential Issues in Health Care Informatics
The relevance of informatics hinges on the provision of relevant information at the right time and to the relevant stakeholders. Therefore, any complications that hinder information availability is a major potential issue in the administration of information. Sittig, Wright, and Coiera (2018) identified nine key short-term hea...
