Case Conceptualization and Treatment Plan for Grant
Problem Discussion
Grant, the film's main character, is the husband of Fiona, an Alzheimer patient and a retired professor of Anglo-Saxon and Nordic literature. In contrast to his recollections of his affairs and their shared existence, Grant's account of Fiona entering a nursing residential care facility is contrasted in the film "Away from Her." Grant starts having affairs, which significantly boosts his happiness even if he still loves and admires Fiona. Grant has a generalized misogynistic attitude toward women and his lovers, and he looks down on any perceived emotionality in their actions or errors in their academic proclivities. Grant wants to maintain Fiona and maintain their union.
Grant retires and moves with Fiona to a rural property gifted to her by her father. Grant pays Fiona numerous visits at the nursing home, which is an unexpected and effective change (Polley, 2006). He is upset about her connection with Aubrey, yet he makes no effort to keep them apart. Grant is disturbed by the fact that his wife has an emotional attachment to another man. According to him, this is a punishment for his infidel lifestyle at the university. Grant attempts to arrange a meeting between the two through Aubrey's wife, Marian after Fiona repeatedly expresses her sadness over Aubrey's departure from Meadowlake. Although this attempt results in Grant having what is believed to be an affair with Marian as a coping strategy for the loss, he also brings Aubrey to see Fiona. These changes and desires affect the lives of Marian and Aubrey. As Grant sees the events unfold, his feelings of regret and shame are entwined with his desperation and grief at losing Fiona for good which shows the cognitive change. He claims that he "never wanted to be away from her," but their separation is unavoidable as she moves out to live at Meadowlake and slowly loses her memory.
Grant is experiencing other losses outside the fact that he is losing Fiona and the memories she had about the marriage. He is also losing the husband status he held in the marriage; they are still married, but Fiona does not see him that way which is a worry. Grant also loses himself because he has become a version he does not recognize. He is in a position where he is struggling to understand the situation and spends most of his time worrying if he is to blame.
Grant's behavioral change and emotions are an exhibition of separation anxiety due to the emotional stress he is going through. He cannot stomach the fact that his wife prefers another man. He earlier thought he could deal with the situation and was optimistic. We can see how distressed he becomes and struggles to deal with the events. His confusion leads to him arranging meetings between Fiona and Aubrey, the man he is insecure about. As we see with Grant and Fiona, losses can result from relationship changes. It is vital to distinguish grief from depression in the case of Grant. A case is no longer considered grief but depression if it persists for more than two months after the event that caused the issue. I recommended uncomplicated ...
