The learning theories and principles that are most useful to the Advanced Practice Nurse in providing high-quality healthcare to patients is the constructivism theory of learning. Constructivist learning theory is founded on the principle that knowledge is constructed instead of absorbed passively (Aliakbari, Parvin, Heidari & Haghani, 2015, 18-19). The learning approach argues that students learn by creating their perceptive and understanding of the world through familiarity with things and reflecting on them. Therefore, when a learner encounters a new idea, for them to internalize and understand it, they have to reconcile it with previous ideas and experiences.
The method of learning follows the principle that learning is an active process. Constructivism is viewed as a reality of the universe independent of the mind, the learner, and the learning process and dependent on active methods such as experiments and resolving problems to gain knowledge and reflect on it to grasp the concept. Thus, it is the best method for training Advanced Practice Nurse learners as it enables them to actively participate in their learning process by understanding the concepts and getting the vital training required to provide high-quality healthcare (Aliakbari, Parvin, Heidari & Haghani, 2015,19).
Also, it is founded on the premise that the attainment of knowledge is personal. The theory enables each learner to grasp different views from the knowledge pool they are exposed to and their values. Hence, each nursing learner is bound to come up with a different interpretation of the learning experienced. Moreover, according to the theory, learning is a social activity where learners learn through sharing and doing things with others (Aliakbari, Parvin, Heidari & Haghani, 2015, 20).
