Capstone Project Change Proposal
Name:
Institution:
Capstone Project Change Proposal on the prevention of Catheters Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTIs)
Background
Research shows that Catheters Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTIs) is ranked second among the most common health care acquired infections. The highest cause of these diseases is associated with the use of an indwelling urethral catheter. In a recent report, it was found that a urinary catheter is the most common indwelling device with about 17.5% of the patients in the main European hospitals having the device. Preventing the infections which are brought about by the instrument is a significant achievement to health-care prevention programs.
Problem Statement
CAUTIs can cause a lot of discomfort to the patients with additional infections such as urethral strictures, nonbacterial urethral inflammation, mobility impairment and mechanical trauma. The infections have been a major cause of mortality in most of the patients (Tryggyason & Apelian 2011). The infections may cause a lot of complications to the patients, and therefore they will spend more than the required time in the hospitals. The increase in the cost of treating the problem is also a major concern to the patients who are in most cases unable to pay the huge hospital bills associated with the treatment.
Purpose of the Change proposal
The change proposal will help in creating awareness about CAUTIs to both the patients and the nurses. Once the right information about the condition has been made available, it is easy to treat it accordingly and reduce the number of patients who die as a result of the disease.
The change proposal will also emphasize on the removal of urinary catheters which are no longer necessary to the patient (Rands, 2008).
The change proposal will facilitate more studies regarding the condition and therefore identify the symptoms and signs of the disease.
Picot
Solely nurses are responsible for managing the patients indwelling urinary Catheters in almost all hospitals. For this reasons, it is only the nurses who can apply the main strategies recommended by the CDC to help in the prevention of CAUTIs. The condition has increased in the recent past, and this can be attributed to the fact that nurses lack enough knowledge on the nurse-driven urinary catheter removal protocol. The nurse’s lack of knowledge has lead to an unnecessary and inappropriate removal of catheters. To get the solution to the problem will be derived from the PICOT question below
P = problem/ patients: For the adult patients who have indwelling urinary catheters and have been in hospital for long
I= Implementation: implementing a nurse-driven urinary catheter removal protocol
C= Comparison: in comparison to when there is no right protocol to be used during the deletion of the Catheters
O= Outcome: A decrease in the number of patients with CAUTIs
T= Time: The period spent by the patients in a hospital before they recover.
Trying to find out whether the number of patients with indwelling urinary catheters will reduce once there is the implementation of a nurse-driven catheter removal protocol as compared to when there is no set protocol put in place.
