The work environment can further worsen emotional exhaustion, yet intervening is necessary to improve and optimize care outcomes. Nurses who suffer burnout are more likely to feel overwhelmed, worn out and exhausted and also face difficulties working, but resilience improves how they cope (Wood et al., 2017). There is evidence on the effectiveness interventions in the prevention or reduction of burnout syndrome in health care workers in different medical units. Typically, the interventions include those affecting individuals such as stress management, cognitive-behavioral techniques, those related to the work environment such as division of responsibilities, flexible schedules avoid work overload, shorter schedules that reduce the workload and improved relations among healthcare professionals. A multidimensional approach is the most effective for the management and prevention of burnout and educating nurses on different strategies’ to prevent the burnout syndrome (Honavar, 2018).
Education decreases the nurses’ experience of moral distress, but the effectiveness of the trainers to impart knowledge should not be ignored. The interventions increase resilience to stress, since nurses in the medical surgical units are exposed to situations that increase the risk of burnout, secondary traumatic stress and compassion fatigue (Jakel et al., 2016). Ideally, nurses ought to have resiliency skills, but if the working environment is not safe this presents challenges to reduce the burnout and stress levels.
