Concepts
Asexual – sexual reproduction – Asexual reproduction is the process of forming an offspring with only one parent involved, and because of this the parent and offspring share the same genetic identity. Sexual reproduction, on the other hand, requires two parents for the reproduction of an offspring to happen, with the genetic information becoming a combination from each parent.
Mitosis – meiosis – Mitosis is the process of cell division that produces two identical daughter cells from the duplication of a single cell, while meiosis produces four daughter cells but only containing half the genetic information of the single-cell that it was from.
Diploid – haploid – Diploid cells contain the same genetic identity by having two sets of chromosomes, while haploid cells contain only one set of chromosomes which is used in sexual reproduction so that it can be combined with another haploid that will form an offspring.
Gametes – Gametes are also called sex cells, which contain a copy of the chromosomes. For the male, it is the sperm, while for the female it is the ovum or egg cell.
Fertilization – This is a process where the sperm cell of the male and the ovum of the female combine together to form a zygote.
Zygote – This is the product of the fertilization process. The haploids from the sperm and egg cell become combined to form the zygote.
Syngamy – Syngamy is the term used when the two nuclei or cells combine and fuse in the process of reproduction.
Blastocyst – The blastocyst is formed from the morula after undergoing differentiation processes from its state of being an embryo. This occurs on the 5th to 7th day after fertilization happened.
Implantation – This is the part after the fertilization process occurs, where the fertilized egg becomes attached to the uterine lining.
Gastrulation – Gastrulation is part of the development process of an embryo, where a single layer of cells continuously fold and divide to create more layers of the cell, creating the primary germ layers.
Embryo – Fetus – There is an embryonic period where the flat embryonic disc differentiates into the endoderm, ectoderm, and mesoderm. Then the formation of the human body including its organs happens. It begins to be curved forming an oblong-shaped body until distinct parts become more evid...
