What are Nurse Practice Acts?
Nurse Practice Acts are state laws that protect the public health and welfare by overseeing and ensuring safe nursing practices are adhered to. They protect those who need nursing care. These are the guidelines that provide safe parameters to protect patients from unprofessional and unsafe nursing practices (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2015).
The Acts mandate a board to set out the scope of practice and responsibilities for registered nurses. In the US, each state determines their Acts content, making them different across the states. The board of nursing is given the authority to develop administrative rules and regulation, to clarify or make laws. The laws are required to be consistent with the NPA as they frequently undergo a process of public review before being enacted (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2014).
