The disease burden caused by diabetes is high and is on a continual rise globally. The ever-increasing prevalence of diabetes is driven by the global increase in obesity and unhealthy lifestyles.
According to American Debates Association, 34.2 million Americans had diabetes in 2018 data, contributing to about 10.5% of the population.
Approximately 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year, and in 2015, 88 million Americans age 18 and above had prediabetes (Diabetes.org).
It is predicted that there will be more than a 592million cases of diabetes by 2035.
Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are the two primary types, with type 2 diabetes accounting for more than 85%) of total diabetes prevalence.
These types of diabetes can lead to multisystem complications of microvascular endpoints—these complications including retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy. The diabetic macrovascular impact includes ischaemic heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. The premature deaths, morbidity, mortality, reduced life expectancy, and financial burden associated with diabetes creates substantial public health concern.
