4.The bill, which came into effect on January 1, 2017, allows advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to prescribe, order, dispense, and administer controlled substances under a physician’s supervisory protocol (FLorida Senate, 2016). The bill to prescribe controlled substances also authorize physician assistants (PAs); however, the prescription of Schedule II controlled substances is limited to seven-day supply. The bill defines controlled substances as drugs that can be abused (FLorida Senate, 2016). The bill was named after Barbara Lumpkin who had been pursuing the expanded authority for nurses for decades.
5.The passage of the bill was a milestone for APRNs not only because of the expanded authority but also because Florida became the last state to expand the authority.
