An analysis of the properties of the neutral atom and its most common ion.
A neutral sodium atom has 11 protons and 11 electrons, and the most common ion is Na+, where there are 10 electrons, and the sodium ion has a +1 charge. Sodium is a reactive and soft metal that has a low melting point. The soft metal reacts with water in different forms and has an atomic weight of 22.9898 (Lenntech, n.d.).The sodium ion does not have an outermost electron like the sodium atom, and this changes how sodium ions react with other atoms.
An explanation of the difference between stabilities of the selected neutral atom and its most common ion
The atom of sodium contains one electron in the outermost shell and losing this electron, and it is necessary for there to be a stable electron configuration. The sodium atom has one less electron, and the atom then gains a positive charge. Sodium ions are more stable than the atom as they form through an ionic bond when there is a reaction with the atoms of another element.
A description of a process in the human body that is impacted differently by the neutral atom and its most common ion
Sodium-ion (Na+) and changes and concentration affect the plasma volume and the extracellular volume when the sodium intake is more than the output by the kidneys, both the sodium concentration and extracellular volume increase and vice versa.
Discussion Question 2What are the differences between ionic and covalent compounds?
In ionic compounds, one atom gives up electrons, and another gains them by forming electrically charged ions. The union between atoms occurs by electromagnetic attraction. In covalent compounds, the bond occurs by sharing electrons; none of...
