Professional associations are most areas where specialized skills and training are required, such as in healthcare. Nursing associations are organizations that facilitate individual professional and personal development. Professional development is a fundamental element for lifelong learning. Therefore, nurses joined professional organizations to develop and grow skills, knowledge and maintain competence, enhance professional nursing practice, and support the achievement of career purpose. Professional nursing associations provide platforms upon which nurses gain knowledge and skills on the contemporary healthcare practices in a particular area of specialization such as critical care, mental care, or advanced nursing practice, among many more! American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) is an example of such a professional nursing association. This paper will focus on the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). It will focus on its vision, mission, purpose, and benefits of being an AACN member. This paper will also discuss how the AACN organization provides a platform for nurses to network, recent changes in critical care, and how it provides opportunities for continuous education and professional growth.
Mission, Vision, and Purpose of American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN)
American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) has core statements, beliefs, and philosophies that underpin its existence. The AACN mission statement is anchored on the needs of patients and their families. Patients and families rely on nurses for expertise, knowledge, and skill during their most vulnerable times. Acute and critical care nurses depend on AACN for expert knowledge and the influence to fulfil their promise to patients and their families. AACN believes in excellence because nothing less is acceptable. To support expertise and skill in critical care, the AACN publishes a monthly newsletter, a clinical magazine targeting practicing nursing critical care practitioner, a quarterly series for advanced practice nurses, and a scholarly journal.
AACN's vision involves a desire to create a healthcare system guided by patients' and their families' needs. In this vision statement, acute and critical care nurses are expected to make their optimal contribution. AACN promotes its mission, vision, and purpose. As contained in mission and vision statements, its sole purpose is rooted in values rooted in its traditions and culture.
