Echinacea, also known as purple coneflower, is a popular herb used to treat various ailments. It is regarded as an over-the-counter herbal remedy for flu or the common cold. It contains various active compounds such as phenolic acid, caffeic acid, alkamides, polyacetylenes, and rosmarinic acid (Rashrash et al., 2017). The plant's roots and upper parts are used teas, tablets, tinctures, and extracts. The components of the plant have many health benefits, such as improved immunity and reduce inflammations. Most of its ingredients are powerful immune systems boosters. The Echinacea plant is full of plant compounds that serve as antioxidants. The antioxidants are molecules that help cells defend against oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a state-linked to chronic illnesses such as heart diseases, diabetes, and others. Also, the plant has compounds called alkamides that enhance antioxidant activities. The compounds renew worn-out antioxidants that help antioxidants reach molecules that are susceptible to oxidative stress. The Echinacea plant treats disorders such as skin disorders, viruses, tumor necrosis factors, inflammation, and interferon production and stimulates the immune system.
The benefits of the Echinacea are that it can shorten the duration of flu or the common cold. It can also reduce cough, fever, and sore throats and help fight various infections. It can also help boost the immune system. The adverse effects associated with the plant are mild GI symptoms, bitter taste, allergic reactions, and fever. Chronic use of the Echinacea herb can lower the positive outcomes for medications for HIV, cancer, and TB (Ben-Sassaon et al., 2020). In addition, the plant can decrease the effectiveness of drugs that are meant to reduce the immune system when taken with other medications.
