Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) refer to infections, which people acquire in the course of receiving treatment for other illnesses or conditions in the hospital. Patients can acquire these infections anywhere where patients receive care including inpatient, outpatient and long-term care settings. For a long time, hospital-acquired infections have been major healthcare problems. Hospital acquired infections are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, increased length of stay and increased health care costs.
