Advocacy Through Legislation
Nurses often become motivated to change aspects within the larger health care system based on their real-world experience. As such, many nurses take on an advocacy role to influence a change in regulations, policies, and laws that govern the larger health care system.
For this assignment, identify a problem or concern in your state, community, or organization that has the capacity for advocacy through legislation. Research the issue and use the "Advocacy Through Legislation" template to complete this assignment.
You are required to cite to a minimum of three sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and relevant to nursing practice.
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Problem
Suicide is one of the major leading causes of death in the United States (US). Hogan and Grumet (2016) indicate that countrywide, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death and over 40,000 deaths have been attributed to suicide every year. In the state of Arizona, suicide has been ranked as the eighth cause of death (Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS), 2019). While suicide can affect anyone, individuals aged between 15 to 44 years of age are the most affected by suicide in Arizona. In fact, suicide is ranked as the second leading of death after unintentional injury among this population (AZDHS, 2019). Just like other states, Arizona has a suicide prevention plan. However, this plan has failed to prevent death by suicide, causing agony to many families who have been touched by suicide. In 2017 alone, over 1,000 Arizonians died by suicide (AZDHS, 2019). If this issue is not addressed, many Arizonians will continue to die, yet death by suicide is preventable.
Idea for Addressing the Issue
Suicide is a cause of public health concern in the US and more specifically, in Arizona. As a nurse, I believe that this concern can be addressed through advocacy. My idea is to advocate for a policy that mandates all registered nurses (RN) in Arizona to receive training on suicide assessment and management. According to Bolster, Holliday, Oneal, and Shaw (2015), lack of training and lack of knowledge on how to assess individuals who are at risk of becoming suicidal are some of the factors that prevent nurses from identifying and assisting suicidal patients. Yet, nurses interact with patients more than other healthcare professionals and as such, have the greatest chance to help prevent suicide. Also, as indicated by Bolster, Holliday, Oneal, and Shaw (2015), most of the individuals who complete suicide usually have contact with healthcare providers prior to their suicide. The proposed legislation will ensure that nurses are well-equipped not only to identify suicidal patients but to also manage and prevent suicides in Arizona.
Evidence-Based Findings
It is a well-known fact that nurses are on the frontline of healthcare and that they interact more regularly with patients that other healthcare professionals. Thus, training them to assess suicidal patients is instrumental in preventing suicide. Training of healthcare providers on how to assess and manage suicide has proved to be successful in suicide prevention. A study conducted by Rothes and Henriques (2018) revealed that healthcare professionals who have received specific training in suicide are more likely to conduct a comprehensive assessment of all patients to identify their suicidal risk. As such, mandating nurses to receive such training will increase their chances of conducting a comprehensive assessment, which will then help them identify at-risk patients.
