Purpose
Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) encounter patients with respiratory difficulties across the age continuum in primary care. The purpose of the activity is to discuss how to address the various types of respiratory issues encountered in the primary care setting.
Activity Learning Outcomes
Through this discussion, the student will demonstrate the ability to:
CO1: Select appropriate medications according to patient presentation and unique patient factors (PO5).
CO2: Analyze factors pertinent to making the most effective drug selection for a client with a specific diagnosis in the primary care setting (PO5).
CO3: Analyze client indicators of therapeutic, ineffective, adverse responses and side effects to drug therapy (PO5).
CO6: Analyze whether pharmacologic therapy is appropriate for individual patients. (PO 5)

Asthma is one of the prevalent respiratory disorders globally. It is attributed to a substantial portion of inpatient and outpatient visits. This paper will focus on an adult with asthma. Adults often present with asthma that varies in severity, with some complaining of mild symptoms to others reporting severe manifestations, including obstructed airway. The most prevalent symptom that manifests in an asthmatic adult patient includes episodic wheezing, cough, shortness of breath, and chest tightness, which tend to worsen at night, resolve spontaneously, or be relieved by medication. Asthma is marked by variable airway obstruction, airway hyper-responsiveness, and airway inflammation. Its management needs avoidance of aggravating environmental factors, using short-acting β2-agonists for immediate symptoms relief, rapid relief of symptoms, use of bronchodilators, and regular inhalation of corticosteroids (McGregor, Krings, Nair & Castro, 2019).

James, a 45-year old old driver, is brought to the emergency department with complaints of chest tightness, dyspnea, red itchy eyes, running nose, and wheezing. James' report says that his symptoms started two years ago and has been occurring intermittently, lasting about 1-3hours. He reports that these symptoms are often worse at night, and environmental that has excessive dust elicit symptoms. He is a non-smoker, non-drinker, and is he married with children. He has been using an inhaler bronchodilator to relieve symptoms.
