Acute glomerulonephritis is a disease or a disorder that affects the glomerulus, located in the kidney. The glomeruli are the minute blood vessels that nourish the kidney. The disorder usually arises from the bacterial infection of the glomeruli and subsequently the kidney nephrons. The bacterial infections here include pharyngitis. Over the past thirty years, the incidences of acute glomerulitis have been on the decline in the continents of Europe and North America respectively. However, in the developing world, the incidences have remained high; averaging between eight to twenty four cases per every 100000 in the population (Fogo & Cohen, 2014).For example, over the past twenty years, there has been a gradual decrease in incidences of the disease in the western world. Additionally, the disease is rare and can occur in any child under the age of two years. However, it affects male children mostly, of the ages ranging from the ages of 5 to about 15 years (Eagles, 2011).In a nutshell, it is usually prevalent during the first ten years of an individual’s life.
There are a number of risk factors involved with acute glomerulonephritis. Considering that the condition has developed from an initial mild state to acute, then it is an indication of a worsening situation. The risk factors include development of diabetes, which is always a factor of the kidneys. Hepatitis virus, especially category C, also has the potential to increase the chances of glomerulonephritis. Additionally, the age of an individual and their blood pressure plays a key role in the development of the condition(Brunner &Smeltzer,2010).The climate is also a determinant, since it plays a role in the survival of the streptococcus bacteria, which is responsible for throat infections that also cause this condition.
