Fueled by this, health professionals are increasingly involving patients in treatment decisions. However, this often comes with challenges, as illnesses and treatments can become complex.
What has your experience been with patient involvement in treatment or healthcare decisions?
In this Discussion, you will share your experiences and consider the impact of patient involvement (or lack of involvement). You will also consider the use of a patient decision aid to inform best practices for patient care and healthcare decision making.

Post a brief description of the situation you experienced and explain how incorporating or not incorporating patient preferences and values impacted the outcome of their treatment plan. A Patient Decision Aid to Inform Best Practices for Patient Care
A patient was allergic to pollen and had severe reactions when the allergy kicked in. The patient would have these severe reactions during certain times of the year because it is when the pollen percentage is highest in the atmosphere. It was necessary to consider the patient’s values and preferences to find a solution for the patient which would have significant results. In incorporating the patient's preferences and values, an allergy decision aid was implemented for the patient to get the best health care. First, the patient had to get their facts. They had to understand their condition and possible treatment solutions. It was challenging because the patient had to accept that hay fever did not have permanent treatment. The patient’s options were either getting medication for their hay fever or getting an injection along with taking their medication. Although the patient’s goal was to get better quickly, they accepted that shots would effectively reduce the symptoms, but they needed to take the shots for three to five years. Additionally, there was the uncertainty of how long the shots would stay effective after they stopped getting them.
The patient weighed both options considering their advantages and disadvantages. With allergy shots, the patient would get skin tests, get a shot twice a week, or get monthly shots for three to five years. Although the shots would relieve allergic symptoms, there are risks involved. In case of underlying conditions, such as coronary artery disease, or pregnancy, shots may pose life-threatening or increase severe reactions. For medication, the advantages were the possibility of avoiding shots and expenses that came with shots, such as regular payment for the long series of shots. The risks of medication were that the patient had to deal with constant sneezing and a running nose, and allergic asthma could increase the patient’s chances of contracting bronchitis or pneumonia (Sheerin, 2003). All these factors need to be considered for the patient's treatment plan.
