It takes a community, family, and school to raise a child. Parents, siblings and other family members play a vital role in a child’s education just like the school does. Studies have confirmed that parent, family and community involvement in a student’s education correlates with higher performance in academics and improvement in school. Research also supports that when parents, school, and communities work as a team to support student’s health, students are less likely to experience emotional distress, attempt suicide or practice unhealthy eating behaviors. It contributes to the high overall performance of the student in school because they strive to please their family members and community, who support them (CDC, 2012). Such students also tend to attend school regularly, stay longer in school and register for higher level education programs than the students coming from communities who do not support health and learning.
Various factors are essential in obtaining family commitment. For instance, parent-school conferences regarding the health of students, which enables parents to meet with the teachers who are involved with the child’s education of different subjects, is an important factor. Such conferences also allow the school to engage parents in health activities that include their children and parents (CDC, 2012). In addition, parents get an opportunity to discuss academic signs of progress of their children and ways to help the children improve. Parents can also join Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) and become a part of decision-making team about the educational service and health programs of their children. Many schools have PTAs or organizations involving parents in the school decision-making programs, however, many parents are often too busy to attend, or a small number of parents is active in such organizations or groups.
