Obesity rates are higher among African-American and Hispanic children when compared to non-Hispanic whites. According to the CDC, among black women, the obesity rate was 56.9% and 37.6% for men in the years 2011-2014. The rates are mostly high among those living in low-income areas where the physical and social environment influences lifestyle. For instance, there is low supply of fresh foods and little or no physical activities, which increase the risk of being overweight, but the federal prevention initiatives are useful to improve health outcomes (Krueger,). Identifying the causes of obesity among African American adults and focusing on the modifiable factors can improve health outcomes and quality of life in the long term.
