Obesity: A Global Health Concern
Obesity is a continuing challenge for citizens and health care providers in the United States, as you likely know. Obesity can lead to numerous chronic health problems, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Childhood diabetes is also increasing at a disconcerting rate, which will lead to an increased health care burden within a few short years. Current estimates set the cost of obesity on the U.S. health care system at $147–$210 billion per year (The State of Obesity, 2016). Think about this week’s media as you take a moment to consider obesity as a burgeoning global challenge.

Health Promotion Strategies to Address Obesity
The rate of obesity in America is 32.2% for men, and 35.5 for women (Flegal et al., 2010) and it has been increasing in the recent past. However, the rate of obesity in the United States is shadowed by the world’s fattest nation, Nauru. In Nauru, the rate of obesity is 71.7, and nearly 94.5 of the population is obese or overweight (Streib, 2007). Nauru is a small island country in the Pacific that has the highest rates of obesity in the world.
The conditions that stem from obesity is higher in Nauru than in the United States. Nearly 31% of all Nauruans are diabetic, and the rate is as high as 45% for 55-65 age group (Streib, 2007). In the United States, only 9.4% of the population is diabetic.
According to (Lazarou & Kouta, 2010), nurses can engage families and parents on ways to structure their diet to have the healthier lifestyle to avoid getting obese or overweight. They can
