The research article seeks to establish the efficacy of the parental intervention in curbing the increasing rate of obesity among the Korean children. The role of parents in dealing with obese children is often overlooked by most researchers working with matters concerning obesity in children. Most research articles on the alarming health problem affecting children around the world focus on the child-based interventions developed to alleviate obesity in children and the adverse effects on their lives. The authors take a different approach to address the health issue by analyzing the importance of engaging or rather actively involving parents in promoting healthy lifestyles and dietary patterns for children with obesity. Through a randomized controlled test on 55 obese children and their parents in different geographical locations, the authors established correlation between the reduction of body mass index of the children and the parental intervention of establishing a healthy relationship with the affected children. The article’s findings are, however, limited to the short-term period during which the authors conducted the research. Long-term research on parental intervention would be conclusive on the efficiency of parental intervention in the treatment process of obesity in children.

The authors make a qualitative analysis of 24 research studies focusing on the long-term involvement of parents in the prevention and control of obesity among children in the European region. The comprehensive review of the previous studies seeks to highlight the efficiency of parental intervention in the treatment process based on the intensity of their participation and involvement in promoting healthy dietary in children as a prevention measure towards obesity. The authors use a coding selection criterion to qualify studies for the review based on the parental intervention involved and coupled with other behavioral change techniques. The authors further analyze the parents' involvement in the treatment of obesity in children as constituted in the selected studies for the research. According to the research analysis, behavioral change techniques involving the parents’ active participation in preventing obesity were significantly low. However, parent’s intervention in both the prevention and treatment of obesity in children around Europe had positive results in promoting weight loss and healthy diet for both the obese and the unaffected children in the long-term.
