To what extent do you think cultural beliefs, values, and traditions may impact health education efforts?
The effect of cultural beliefs on people's health is broad. Most cultures are full of health beliefs that elaborate on what causes diseases, how they can be cured, and who should conduct the patient's treatment process. The degree to which patients consider their culture when it comes to conditions can have an intense effect on how they receive physicians' information and the way they use it. In western countries, like the US, people see an illness as an outcome of natural phenomena. Therefore, they administer medical treatments to fight the microorganisms by using advanced technology to diagnose and treat the condition (Hernandez & Gibb, 2020). On the other hand, some societies believe diseases result from superhuman phenomena, and therefore, conduct prayer or other rituals to overcome the paranormal forces. An excellent example of this is Thailand, where a young girl named Justine Chitsena, who was suffering from congenital heart disease and needed heart surgery, was taken to the temple to perform a temple ceremony to heal her. The reason for this move was because her grandmother believed and adhered to the Laotian beliefs.
Another significant effect that culture implicates on health is poor doctor-patient communication. Communication between the patient and the physician has a crucial role in bringing positive health effects, including adherence to prescriptions and future decision-making on modification of the patient's health condition (Iwelunmor et al., 2014). If there is poor doctor-patient communication, there are high chances of poor health results and non-adherence to the prescribed drugs, leading to unnecessary treatment and investigations. An excellent example of this is when Mohammad Kochi, an Afghanistan who suffered stomach cancer, was not treated because of poor communication between the doctors and his daughters, who acted as his translators.
