There are persistent concerns among some parents on pediatric vaccination who prefer to skip immunization. Vaccines are essential in disease prevention among children. Therefore it is essential for healthcare providers to understand the reasons why parents hesitate or refuse to vaccinate their children. The concerns are due to religious reasons, safety concerns, philosophical reasons, personal beliefs or a wish to seek additional information from health practitioners (McKee & Bohannon, 2016). It is a patient’s right to refuse medication, and therefore vaccinations cannot be forced. Although there are no federal laws concerning administrations of vaccines, individual states have rules that dictate immunization for children before entering schools (CDC, 2018).
Physicians often interact with parents who do not want to vaccinate their children. In this case, for example, a mother does not wish her 18-month-old daughter immunized due to religious reasons, she says she believes in naturopathic medicine.
