Reading comprehension must be taken into consideration before, during, and after reading in order to create maximum effect to the minds of the readers. Accordingly, the teachers are tasked to create an optimal reading environment for their students through different techniques that would foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter. In this article, some of the techniques aimed for comprehension would be listed and discussed. The particular book in focus would be Alex Gino’s George, which narrates the story of a girl (George) who is being identified as a boy in their own class CITATION WeA17 \l 1033 (WeAreTeachers.com, 2017). In line with this, the author of this article believes that reading comprehension in all stages of reading is crucial in order to understand this effective book that teaches students about the importance of gender identity.
Techniques for Reading Comprehension
A background of the subject matter is very important before reading in order to maximize the comprehension of the students CITATION Sid13 \l 1033 (Siddiek & Alfaki, 2013). Thus, pre-reading activities would be needed in order to orient the students about what seems to be a delicate subject matter. In line with this, the three pre-reading activities that the author would do in order to maximize understanding would be (1) lecture about gender roles and expectations, (2) interactive discussion with students and (3) laying out of objective questions. These three are aimed to give a general overview of prior ideas and misconceptions of students, which could affect their comprehension of the subject matter. Accordingly, this would only be an overview and any misconceptions would be addressed in the post-reading activities.
