Creating the most optimal learning environment for every student is one of the foremost responsibilities of the teacher. Through it, the students would be able to learn in a holistic manner. However, there are times when the teacher must be responsive to the needs of the child. In the case at hand, Brian’s behavior was said to have changed significantly. From a child who is “attractive” and “well-liked” by his peers, he became elusive and ‘rebellious’ in his English subject.
Setting Events, Antecedents, and Consequences
In this case, Brian’s dysfunctional behaviors are less pronounced before he was placed in an intervention class. Although he was having problems with English, he only interrupts the class before this event. However, his behaviors have worsened on January as he was placed in an intervention class. He becomes non-participative and cooperative. This suggests that his placement in an ‘intervention class’ is perhaps the reason for his worsening attitude.
Another thing to consider in this case is the ‘antecedents’ that caused his behavior. Based from the facts alone, it could be said that one of the main ‘triggers’ for his behavior is his ‘English classes’.
Lastly, these triggers have led to a defiant, elusive, and uncooperative behavior as a consequence. It was said to show these behaviors during his English subjects, and not in other subjects, such as Math. This means that he is using this behavior as a ‘coping mechanism’. Ultimately, this led to his poor grades in the subject.
Rights of the Parent
As according to the ‘Individuals with Disabilities Education Act’ (IDEA), parents have the right to be informed of and be a part of developing a treatment or intervention for their children. Accordingly, since Brian is diagnosed as having learning disabilities his mother should be informed of any interventions and the expected results of choosing such treatment CITATION Andnd \l 1033 (Andrew, n.d.).
