Active learning requires students to interact with the material and content of the study directly. This type of learning encourages students to take charge of their studying through discussions, role-playing, and practice. Active learning involves direct interaction with students' learning materials and reflection on the content learned (Bonwell et al., 1991).
Teachers would ideally love their students to learn and understand the concepts taught to them and apply them in the real world. It is effectively done by integrating active learning in the student's coursework. Attention is drawn from the teacher and delivery of learning content to the students and their active engagement with the content taught.
Integrating theory into practice can be done by providing opportunities for students to read, write and reflect on the topics, ideas, and concerns of a subject (Jones et al., 1993). It will give the student a chance to become an involved learner that thinks dynamically. Teachers employ specific techniques in active learning, such as participation in class discussions, problem-solving, studying case scenarios, group projects, and debates. Integrated learning is essential for learners because they acquire networking, communication, investigation, and research skills.
Active learning challenges the traditional education model where learners are passive, listening, and taking notes. It improves skills, understanding of concepts, and learning how to learn (McDonough, 2012) by solving problems, analyzing scenarios, and reflecting on what is being taught. The components of active learning are intentional engagement, observation, and reflection. Purposeful engagement ensures that students carry out the tasks they are expected to learn.
