Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral condition that manifests in childhood and lasts into maturity. It is one of the most disorders that have increased among the children and the adolescents in the United States affecting their learning process. The disorder is characterized by signs of inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that hamper social skill development and reduce academic performance. Since ADHD is inherited, a child has a 1 in 4 chance of having a parent who also has the disorder (CHADD’s National Resource Center, 2022). Lack of awareness and ways of dealing with children diagnosed with ADHD has led to rise in these cases within the past years.
Over the past few decades, the number of children receiving treatment in the United States for this disease has significantly increased. Children in America are now diagnosed with ADHD at a rate of 9%, up from an average of 6% ten years ago. It is estimated that one in twenty children is diagnosed with ADHD (Amy & Henry, 2018). This condition affects about 5.7 million children between the ages of 6 and 17.
There has been an upward trend in the number of ADHD diagnosis among children in the United States. According to research by Darios et al, (2013), the Rates of ADHD diagnosis were 2.5% in 2001 and 3.1% in 2010, with a relative increase of 24% in the number of children with ADHD. The diagnosis of ADHD has increased dramatically over the past ten years, where it now stands at 9.4%. Statistics suggest that there has been a noticeable rise in the rate of ADHD diagnoses among kids covered by the health plan over time. For more than 20 years, gender has been regarded as an important moderating element in research on ADHD. Generally, men are more often than women to be diagnosed with ADHD, with a male to female ratio of about 4:1 (Darios et al, 2013).
Schooling children diagnosed with the disorder face more barriers to achievement compared to ordinary learners. Those with ADHD may struggle academically due to symptoms like difficulties paying attention, difficulty sitting still, and problems managing impulses. In most cases, the teachers find it difficult to balance between teaching the average students and those with ADHD.
Numerous studies have demonstrated that students with ADHD are much more likely to perform poorly in school. The average grade a child with ADHD receives is lower than a child without ADHD, and they are more likely to fail. For example, when compared to their peers, ADHD kids had a slightly higher likelihood of being retained in a grade, a nearly 15-fold higher likelihood of receiving special education services, and a lower likelihood of graduating from high school (Baweja, 2015).
In terms of activity limitations on reading and math achievement exams, children with ADHD do much worse than controls. In terms of restrictions in social participation when compared to controls, children with ADHD have higher rates of repeating grades, using remedial academic services, and being placed in special education programs. They are also more likely to be expelled, suspended, or repeat a grade (Irene & Heidi, 2007).
