According to the Crown Academy of English video, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is “a system for representing phonetic sounds with symbols.” It helps us get the correct pronunciation of words. Therefore, an understanding of IPA symbols is important because one can understand how different words are pronounced. When you look for any word in the dictionary, there are symbols that are included before the definition. For example, when you look up the word “deal” in the Cambridge Dictionary, the symbols “/diːl/” are shown before the definition (Cambridge Dictionary, n.d.). These symbols are referred to as the IPA.
