When teaching mathematics to students with mild to moderate disabilities, a special education teacher will often teach in different learning environments. One of the environments may be in an inclusive or mainstream classroom, where the teacher will collaborate and co-teach with the general education teacher. In this position, the teacher will need to work with the general education teacher to provide expertise to ensure students with disabilities are fully integrated into the classroom instruction.
Allocate at least 3 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Actively observe, interview, and collaborate with the mentor teacher, paraeducator, or aid who currently teaches math in a middle school classroom (Grades 6-8), about collaboration in the inclusive/mainstream classroom.
Your observations should address the following:
Roles of special education teachers, general education teachers, and students with disabilities in the inclusive setting
Opportunities to demonstrate leadership while collaborating in each specified role
Leadership opportunities to collaborate outside of the classroom, for each specified role
Collaboration models that have been successful for each teacher, taking into consideration student needs
Ways to create and maintain safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environments to engage individuals with disabilities in meaningful learning activities and social interaction
Advantages and disadvantages of collaborating while teaching math
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
In 250-500 words, summarize and reflect upon your conversations, observations, and instructional experiences. Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice.

Special education teachers' roles in an inclusive classroom are that of a translator and leader. If an institution seeks to have a successful instructional program, all students must be able to participate, and the teacher must understand their needs. The role of a special education teacher in an inclusive classroom is to understand the student's needs, such as knowing their academic strengths and weaknesses (Hagaman & Casey, 2018). Such offers the special education teacher an opportunity to demonstrate leadership as they guide every student. The team teaching model has been successful for this teacher because it makes it easy for them to understand each student's needs.
Among the roles of the general education teacher in an inclusive classroom are leader, advocate, and translator. Such teachers lead their students by example. They always take the initiative on issues that affect the students in their class. In this case, they try their best to understand the needs of special-needs students to facilitate smooth learning. The classroom setting can be difficult for both special and general education teachers. Such is a common case when teaching students with difficulties with certain tasks. Hence, the general teacher has an opportunity to guide the special education teacher in offering all the students quality education. The team teaching model was also successfully utilized by the general education teacher.
The role of the students with disabilities in the inclusive classroom is to accept the provider of their services. Students will benefit more from instruction from teachers who understand them and do not have preconceived notions of their abilities (Zarrinabadi & Ebrahimi, 2019).
