While highly beneficial, guided reading on its own is insufficient to enhance pupils' literacy skills fully. It is part of a larger literacy structure that combines writing workshops, collaborative reading, personal writing, and read-aloud.
There are a few key traits that set guided reading apart from other methods of small-group education. Initially, learners are divided into groups based on their educational reading ability to read the exact text correctly. Next, each learner in the cohort reads the entire text or a selected piece of the reader to oneself (Fountas, 2017). Popcorn reading or round-robin techniques, in which the instructor calls on one learner to read whereas the other people listen and conform, are not included in reading instruction.
Before, during, and after reading, the teacher gives sufficient guidance for learners to develop the competencies required to read exceedingly challenging books over practice.
