Assessment strategies are an important element of effective teaching. For this assignment, you will create an essay for a presentation to share with your students at the beginning of the school year. The essay should provide students with an engaging overview of the kinds of assessments they can expect in the content area, as well as ways to be successful on each assessment.
Identify the grade level and content area you are focusing on, and include the following in your presentation: (6th grade Ancient Civilizations--Middles School Social Studies)
• An overview of formative and summative assessments in your content area
• Description of how you embed engaging learning experiences into the classroom that provide multiple ways for students to demonstrate knowledge and skills
• Explanation of how content area assessments are aligned with learning objectives
• Explanation of how assessments are administered in an unbiased, fair manner and account for students’ individual differences
• Description of the format of four content-specific assessments you will use during the school year (two formative and two summative)
• Study skills, preparation, and execution students should use to succeed on the assessments

The formative assessments in teaching ancient civilizations are questioning and multiple-choice answers. These techniques will allow the educator to determine the areas where the students have understood the concepts and the areas they have not understood. Every student will be given the same questions about ancient civilizations to answer. The multiple-choice quizzes will also aid the educator in determining the student’s capability to differentiate the content taught in class. The summative assessments to use in this content area are practice presentations and visual representations. The practice presentations will help learners build knowledge in the concepts they have learned in class. It will also test the student’s capability to express what they have understood. The visual representations will allow students to give a detailed representation of the concepts they have learned in class while enabling them to remember concepts about ancient civilizations.
Engaging learning experiences will be embedded by asking the students questions to test their previous knowledge of ancient civilizations. Such information will make it less challenging for the teacher to identify the key areas to emphasize while teaching the students. It will also help in identifying the learning capabilities of the students. For instance, gifted students are more likely to remember what they learned in the previous grades than students with special needs.
