I have observed quite a number of the harmful effects that high-stakes testing have on ELLs. The most prominent one is the decline in the self-confidence of ELLs because failing these tests makes them feel as if they will never excel in the English language. With low confidence comes even worse performance among ELLs. The second one is the inappropriate retention and/ or placement of students. In most cases, students’ grade promotion or retention is highly determined by the test scores of the student, yet the scores fail to reflect fully on the student’s progress.
Personally, I have experienced first-hand the stressful teaching and learning environment that arises from the high-stakes testing. I have been in a situation where I contemplated leaving my place of work because the ELLs in the school were too anxious about their tests and their anxiety affected my work and enthusiasm as well.
