Is it reasonable to expect urban schools to be reformed without changing the political economy of urban areas?
Schools gift societies with some of the best minds the world has ever seen. Essentially, some of the world’s best innovations are by individuals and youngsters who are still in school. It is thus in the best interest of the society to ensure that schools are sufficiently catered for regarding resources and funding. However, the above has not been the case at least to the urban schools. Most urban schools are underfunded and thus lack some of the basic equipment that are needed to help teachers in their delivery. The result has unsurprisingly been poor results and increased levels of poverty in most urban areas. As a result calls to reform urban schools became louder until the powers that be decided to initiate reform mechanisms. However, some researchers have questioned the governments’ decision to reform urban schools while neglecting the political economy of urban areas. Their argument is that it is illogical and a retrogressive reform plan. Conversely, some people think that the performance of urban schools does not correlate with the conditions of the urban areas. The former argument seems rational, and this article will argue in line with the thoughts of such researchers to help point out the imminent failure of the decision to reform urban schools while neglecting the urban areas.
