Strategies for the Inclusive Classroom
Having an inclusive classroom should be a motivation for every teacher as it marks the basis of success in education. A disintegrated learning environment leads to more harm than success for the learners. It is upon the teacher to address personal and interpersonal issues to create a standard inclusive setting for learning. Achieving a proper and inclusive classroom requires strategic inputs in multiple learning areas, including identifying learner expectations, instilling self-advocacy and self-determination, developing interpersonal skills, encouraging active participation, and exploring multiculturalism.
Identifying Realistic Expectations
Various strategies can be implemented to ease the identification of realistic expectations for the personal and social behaviors of learners. The primary strategy is to allow learners to write a class promise or a class pledge to share expectations on how to interact with and treat each other (Eredics, 2018). This strategy is vital in understanding the social culture of the learner. Making the learners write pledges also creates responsibility for the classroom besides helping the learners to develop respect for one another. The other strategy is to secure the attention of the learners and indicate the objectives of the sessions (Mastropieri & Scruggs, 2018). Teachers can also collaborate with learners to list the expectations, including prospects such as no karate, no kicking, being nice, and no stealing, among others. The choice of strategy should depend on the characteristics of the learners.
Developing Interpersonal Skills
Teachers should take advantage of learners’ experiences to try and teach interpersonal skills in various ways. Incidental teaching is ideal for learners with mild and moderate disabilities as they may memorize and learn from their experiences. Incidental teaching is a natural interaction between learners and adults in which the learners are accorded orientation on various human-to-human interactions through the adult as the referent point (Eredics, 2018). The other strategy is reading, discussing, and applying concepts in literature and videos. Many stories for the young learners are based on developing interpersonal skills such as making friends or encountering new situations.
