My research paradigm
The need to know how and why, forms part of my research paradigm. Interpretivism paradigm is ideal for my research because it involves interpreting elements of the study, integrating human interest in the study (Crotty, 1998). Interpretivism offers an evaluation perspective of positivism in the social sciences, especially on understanding nature and knowing reality (Crotty, 1998). According to Booth, Colomb & Williams, (2008), interpretivism paradigm involve, analyzing reality subjectively and constructively, to understand dialogs of reality. During research, the assumption is that reality can be accessed through social discourses like language, consciousness and shared meanings (Booth, Colomb & Williams, 2008).
What are the key concepts of this paradigm?
The key concept of interpretivism is based on the idea of positivism. The beliefs of idealism are used to analyze the diverse approaches like social constructivism (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007). The general belief is that the true meaning of social construction resides in the world independently of our consciousness (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007). From an interpretivism perspective, it is important that during research, we need to appreciate the difference between individuals. Most interpretivism research focuses on meaning and employs multiple methods to reflect the different aspect of research (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007).
Theoretical perspective that informs my research
Interpretivist paradigm hypothesizes that values are important in any research process therefore, understand the truth is a process of negotiation mostly done through dialogue (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007). Research process involves an investigative process whereby research findings emerge through dialogue, conflicting research interpretations are agreed upon among individuals (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007).
