People, not just of this country, are currently experiencing and fighting the pandemic. Although pandemic is not new to most of us, have we understood the pandemic’s issue with just us knowing the situation? Or are we aware and ready of the gravity that a pandemic brings? To truly understand the pitfalls of it, people should read, prepare, and take action.
According to Honigsbaum (2009), the word pandemic is from the Greek words pan, which means all, and demos means the people. Combining the two, pandemic mostly refers to the circumstances that involve the majority of all of the individuals. This term is mostly used in the medical fields wherein an epidemic that occurred had slowly overwhelmed a significant number of people. There are several pandemic cases recorded in our history, and some of them are Acute Hemorrhage Conjunctivitis (AHC), Plague, Cholera, Influenza, and now, the current pandemic, COVID-19. The statistics show the graveness of the pandemic that we are currently experiencing. This is why just knowing a pandemic is not enough. We should be aware of how and what we should do during these events.
When there is a pandemic outbreak, the government pioneers the preparations and responses for that occurrence. They prepare different sets of protocols that need to be followed and quick responses to lessen the pandemic’s mortality. Since 1993, the United States, followed by the European Union, started to prepare response plans for pandemics that could occur in the future. That preparation resulted in the making of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network that was established last 2000.
